Magazine Road, or Jalan Magazine in Malay, is the first of originally seven parallel roads after the Prangin Canal. For that reason, it is known in Hokkien as Thau Tiau Lor, meaning "First Road", a short form of "Thau Tiau Lor Koay Kang'a" or "First Road after the Canal". It is the first road within the Seven Streets Precinct.

Magazine Road is right at the heart of George Town. It ends at Magazine Circus or Simpang Enam, a six-corner junction that has since been reduced to five when Gladstone Road made way for the Komtar development.
